SUN CITY, Ariz. – Gordy and Joyce Hagen’s seven months of the year here -away from their Minnesota residence – mean no Internet access at home. A short trip to the Sun City Library rectifies that, unless the Hagens have to wait for a computer. With more than 12, 000 visitors during December, chances are the Hagens might have to get in the queue.
Recently, those chances dropped in the couple’s favor, as well as to the advantage of hundreds of others who use the Bell Center facility or its companion in the Fairway Center for getting online.
A total of $150, 000 in improvements to the two libraries includes three new computers at the Fairway Branch Library and six new ones in the 14, 000-square-foot Bell Branch, as well as three floor-mounted computer stations at Bell. The Maricopa County Library District also purchased a new table and seven new chairs for Fairway and 11 new tables and 22 chairs for Bell, and installed new mobile shelving at each site, while adding a kiosk at the Bell location for recording public documents remotely with the Maricopa County Recorders Office. The work was done from August through early October.

The equipment and installation was funded entirely by the all-volunteer organization that supports library activities and programs, the Friends of the Sun City Libraries.
"We are extremely happy about our growing relationship with members of the Friends' organization and their continued support of the libraries. They have gone to great lengths to ensure the Sun City libraries are housed in great facilities and the community has access to a huge variety of books, digital materials and exceptional programs, " said Clint Hickman, county District 4 supervisor during a recent unveiling of the libraries upgrades.
Friends regularly raises money through private donations and sales of donated books, CDs, DVDs and other material at its used-books store, Books Around the Corner at the Bell Branch. The organization accepts donated materials at the store, run entirely by volunteers.
Friends President Tom Everitt, a retired educator, said the group’s contribution is but one element of a successful library. The library district gives you this kind of service that we couldn’t do, RCSC (Recreation Centers of Sun City) gives us a facility and takes care of it, and Friends tries to support it, ” he said.
The shelving came on wheels so it could be moved to accommodate library programs, said Cindy Kolaczynski, library district director.
Other features specifically to aid the senior population include leaving the area for the bottom shelf empty.
